Outline of Ceramic Art & Design Program for International Students

IV. Background
The program exploits cultural advantages of Hubei, and helps international students understand and learn Chinese culture by studying traditional ceramic culture and the culture of the Three Kingdoms in Jingzhou.
The program covers many courses, including an exploratory visit to typical ceramic producing areas, ceramic forming techniques and decoration, explanation of traditional ceramic technology, production of traditional ceramic products, modern ceramic art creation, and interdisciplinary integration and innovation, etc. It values the role of hands-on practice in promoting crafts and culture.

Basic Pottery Making Techniques (Plate/Slab Building) |
The course aims to enable students to master the operating principles and key points of pottery making techniques like slab/plate/strip building, and to make pottery and sculptures as per pottery making requirements. |

Artistic Practice |
Students are expected to visit ceramic producing areas, museums and art galleries in Hubei and in northwest and central regions of China to understand the glamour of traditional Chinese ceramic culture. |

Static Clay Sculptures |
Making static clay sculptures is a basic training method used during the course. The course emphasizes the correlation among line, plane, volume, and the texture of the static object, and enables students to develop abilities of making static clay sculptures. |

Basic Pottery Making Techniques (Throwing) |
Students taking the course will learn how to knead pottery clay, master the technique of chrysanthemum kneading, practice pottery making according to the procedures like clay centering, opening-up, base forming, body shaping, and clay modeling one by one so as to use the throwing technique to make pottery independently. |

Making static clay sculptures is a basic training method used during the course. The course emphasizes the correlation among line, plane, volume, and the texture of the static object and how these elements are coordinated. |

Ceramic Decorative Art (Famille Rose and Antique Finish) |
The course introduces the history of development of traditional ceramic art, and teaches students how to distinguish on-glaze decoration from monochrome glaze and transmutation glaze so as to enable students to use one or more techniques in artistic creation. |

The course teaches students how to make the main body and accessories of the traditional lotus seed pot with flat lid so as to enable them to mater elementary methods and techniques of making hand-made dark-red enameled pottery. |
