When the Aegean breeze met the Yangtze waves, when Olympian thought conversed with Jingchu civilization, a cultural journey spanning 8,000 kilometers quietly unfolded at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (HIFA). This July, eightYoung Envoysfrom the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Greece, brimming with passion for Eastern art, immersed themselves in the vibrant life and millennia-old culture of Wuhan. Fourteen days: intangible heritage crafts, ink and brush painting, seeking the Tao on sacred mountains... They touched with their hands, felt with their hearts, writing their own Eastern stories in the studios of Tanhualin and amidst the mists of Wudang Mountain. See how they mastered the art of their fingertips and sought enlightenment amidst the landscape!

(Chapter1: Finger Magic, Wonder Born from Heritage)

Imagine warm maltose being given life in the hands of Greek youth! In theYimeng Folk CultureSugar Figure Blowing class, puffing out their cheeks to blow air, watching the sugar blob instantly inflate into adorable little animals – the surprise and sense of accomplishment filled the classroom with laughter and a sweet aroma.Look, the wings of this sugar bird need to be gently blown like this to unfold!Zhu Hongyan, an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of sugar sculpting, explained in thick Wuhan dialect with gestures. Maria, a trainee from Greece, held her breath with rapt attention as the warm amber syrup in her hands gradually took shape with a breath of air. The trainees marveled not only at the transformation of the maltose syrup from a liquid into a three-dimensional sculpture but also grasped the wisdom ofunity of heaven and manin Chinese aesthetics throughMr.Zhusreminder:The heat must be precise, the breath must be steady.

After the sweetness came paper blossoms. In theScissorcraft & ArtistryChinese Folk Paper Cutting workshop, sheets of red paper transformed under the dance of scissors into intricate and exquisite patterns. From simple window decorations to auspicious symbols, the Greek students held their breath, experiencing the Eastern wisdom ofrevealing the universe within a tiny space.Focused eyes, careful cuts, and ultimately, the satisfied smiles upon completing their works were the most beautiful footnotes to cultural resonance.Symmetrical patterns are like the sun and moon on the grasslands—they need to echo each other to achieve harmony.Using this metaphor to bridge cultural gaps,Mr.Cai helped the students quickly grasp the essence of folding, drawing, and cutting. As the hollowed-out character(fu, meaning fortune) intertwined with Greek olive branch motifs on the red paper, the scissors had become a more eloquent tool of communication than words.

Meanwhile, theeverythingcanbelacqueredGreat Lacquer Art experience unveiled the mystery of an Easternsecret technology. The unique luster and texture of natural lacquer, coupled with the complex lacquering techniques, allowed everyone to feel the solemnity and depth of this ancient craft. The students dripped pigments onto the waters surface, swirled them with their fingertips until they bloomed like liquid clouds, then gently brushed the patterns onto a folding fan. As the colors transferred, Narantuya, a Mongolian trainee, marveled:It looks just like sunset over the grasslands—only captured in another form.

The Wuhan Dough Sculpture Intangible Heritage class showed thateverything can be molded. Colorful dough was kneaded and shaped at their fingertips, transforming into lively figures and adorable animals. The soft plasticity of the dough brought endless fun, while also inspiring awe at the Chinese folk artistsability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. WhenAthenaand Peking Opera masks took shape side by side in the palm of the artist's hands, what took form was more than sculpted figures—it was an instant of cultures intertwined. Its like playing with colored clay, but with so much more cultural depth!one student shared excitedly.

How can art make a city more humane? In the Architectural Design class taught by He Ming, Dean of the Social Aesthetic Education Institute, the renovation of Wuhans historic lilong lanes collided with the preservation story of Greeces Acropolis, igniting vibrant dialogue. Students discovered that whether observing the blue-brick lanes of Chu River-Han Street or the stone-paved alleys of Athens' Old Town, the dialogue between tradition and modernity follows a shared logic—precisely the profound essence of the coursesdialectical dimension.

In the incense ceremony class, a sandalwood brazier lit by Zhang Bojian—inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Chu-style incense blending—cast the room into profound silence. As students experienced the ritual ofcharcoal-heated incense appreciation, they contemplated the Eastern philosophy ofintrospection through scent.AGreek participant, later reflected in his journal:Chineseincense is meditative, revealsthe poetry inour life.

As the three-day immersive experience concluded, the participants' bags filled not only with handmade sugar figurines, paper-cuttings, and lacquered fans—but with a renewed understanding ofintangible cultural heritage. It is not a static relic preserved in museums, but tangible wisdom alive in everyday practice. He Ming, the Deanof the School of Continuing Educationat HubeiInstituteof Fine Arts, reflected that this cultural exchange embodied the philosophy ofcultivating humanity through beauty:When people from diverse cultural backgrounds jointly feel the warmth of maltose syrup and the resilience of paper, craftsmanship transcends technique to become a universal cipher connecting hearts across nations.

(Chapter2: Ink and Brush, Rhythm Born on Paper)

Starting with theBrief Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy Culture, the Greek students formally stepped into the mysterious realm of ink and wash. Holding the soft Chinese brush, dipping it into thick black ink, and attempting their first stroke on Xuan paper, that feeling of caution mixed with novelty was like opening a door to an ancient civilization.

From copying and expanding the most ancient Seal Script, to recognizing the distinct styles of Clerical, Regular, Running, and Cursive scripts, every lift, press, turn, and pause was a dialogue with brushwork techniques millennia old. During theFree Creation with Individual Tutoringsessions, they tried writing their own names, even Greek letters, with the brush,a magical fusion of Eastern and Western line art in that moment.

The rhythm of ink had barely faded when color and artistic conception blossomed in Chinese Fan-Surface Flower-and-Bird Painting. Learning the subtleties of theFan-Surface Boneless Style—shaping forms directly with color without outline strokes—captivated them with its Xieyi (freehand spirit). Following the teachersdemonstrationSketching Demonstrations of Various Flowers and Birds, the students picked up their brushes, depicting flowers, birds, insects, and fish as they envisioned them on plain white fans. Though the brushwork was still nascent, the focus, the courage to try, and the natural charm emanating from their paintings were deeply moving.

(Chapter3: Ancient Treasures Whisper in Jingchu, Flute Songs Intoxicate on River’s Edge)

If the workshops in Tanhualin allowed them to touch the living pulse of tradition, and the mists of Wudang offered a glimpse into the profound mysteries of the universe, then two other stops on their Wuhan itinerary served as time tunnels spanning millennia, enabling the Greek students toconverse with echoes of history and become intoxicated by the poetic charm of the River City.

Stepping into this hall that embodies the essence of Jingchu civilization, time seemed to instantly rewind. The magnificent Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng, with their unparalleled scale and exquisite craftsmanship, instantly seized the gaze and awe of everyone present. The docent lightly struck a bell, and its clear, melodious sound—still resonant after over 2,400 years—echoed through the exhibition space, leaving students from Crete, the birthplace of music, holding their breath in awe, marveling at the pinnacle of ancient Chinese ritual and musical civilization.Unbelievable! This sound... it feltlike its from another world!one student whispered in amazement.

The gleaming Sword of Goujian, King of Yue, displayed in a case, remained uncorroded after over two millennia. The exquisite diamond-shaped lattice pattern and inscriptions in bird-and-insect script on its blade spoke of royal authority and the extraordinary wisdom of the ancients. The dazzling gold and jade artifacts unearthed from the Tomb of Prince Liangzhuang elicited continuous gasps ofWow!throughout the hall. These silent national treasures recounted the glorious past of the Jingchu region more vividly than any textbook could, giving the Greek students a more intuitive and awe-inspiring understanding of the long history and profound depth of Chinese civilization.

Carrying the lingering awe from history, the students ascended theFirst Tower Under Heaven for Rivers and Mountains—the Yellow Crane Tower. Ascending the steps, the upturned eaves and corners on each level displayed the lively beauty of traditional Chinese architecture. Reaching the top and gazing afar, the mighty Yangtze River and the three towns of Wuhan unfolded before their eyes in a magnificent panorama. Is this where Li Bai and Cui Hao wrote their poems? It feels like the wind carries stories!Touching the ancient stone railings and recalling the ethereal legend of the immortal riding a crane, they savored the poems, plaques, and couplets left by literati through the ages. The students felt as if they were within a flowing scroll of Chinese culture. The essence of seal and clerical script practiced in their calligraphy class now resonated wonderfully with the pavilions, towers, and landscape before them. They eagerly raised their cameras, capturing not only the magnificent scenery but also attempting to seize that millennia-old poetic sentiment flowing through the bricks, tiles, beams, and pillars.

(Chapter4: Silken Robes Swirling in Tanhualin, Bustling Vibes Steeped in River City Nights)

The fourteen-day itinerary wasn't just about focused creation in classrooms or solemn reverence in museums; it also included immersing themselves in the vibrant pulse of Wuhan's streets and alleys. During their free time, these Young Envoys from the Aegean shores donned the flowing robes of Huaxia and strolled through Tanhualin, where time leaves its imprint, truly experiencing the unique, bustling human atmosphere and the seamless blend of ancient and modern that defines theRiver Cityof Wuhan.

Stepping into the traditional Hanfu studio, the dazzling array of colorful Hanfu instantly ignited everyones curiosity. With the help of professional stylists, participants carefully selected their favorite styles—elegant high-waisted Tang-style ruqun dresses, free-flowing Song-style beizi jackets, or dashing Ming-style feiyufu robes. As they shed their modern attire before the mirror and transformed into figures stepping out of classical paintings, excitement and wonder were written all over their faces. Carefully adjusting the wide sleeves and delicate ties, they gained a firsthand understanding of the beauty of ritual etiquette and refined grace embodied in Hanfu.

Strolling Through Tanhualin: Touching“Living” Historydressed in Hanfu, the participants wandered leisurely along the bluestone-paved streets of Tanhualins historic district. Here, no cold glass curtain walls intruded—only colonial-era houses draped in ivy, artistic boutiques perfumed with the scents of old books and coffee, and craft shops showcasing traditional handmade wares. The whispers of history and the pulse of modern life coexist here in magical harmony. They paused to admire street performersacts, examined folk artifacts of old Wuhan with curiosity, and exchanged smiles with local youngsters also dressed in Hanfu at street corners—cultural barriers melting away in an instant.

When asked about his impression of Wuhan, Rena, a student from Greece, shared emotionally:Compared to Shanghais modern glamour, Im intoxicated by Wuhan! Its streets hum with vibrant life, yet places like Tanhuallin preserve a uniquely ancient elegance—history feels alive here, breathing right beside me.The citys true charm lies not only in the grandeur of its mighty rivers, but also in this urban fabric woven from everyday vitality—where profound history and vibrant modernity blend seamlessly into the rhythm of daily life.

(Part5: Clay Transformed, Seeking Tao in Mountains and Waters)

Artistic exploration wasnt confined to two dimensions. In the modern Ceramic Lab at the Canglongdao Campus, students experienced the joy of three-dimensional shaping throughCeramic slab forming, ceramic coil forming.Slapping clay slabs, rolling clay coils, feeling the resilience of the clay in their hands. The subsequentCeramic decoration, whether carving patterns with knives or embellishing with glaze, saw each unique greenware piece embody their understanding and creativity in three-dimensional form.

Near theend ofthe program, a cultural pilgrimage awaited them: a journey to Wudang Mountain,The First Immortal Mountain Under Heaven. The mist-shrouded peaks, the simple yet solemn palace-temple complex, and the demonstrations of Wudang martial arts moving with effortless grace deeply impressed these students from the cradle of Western civilization. Hiking ancient mountain paths, touching millennia-old stone steps, sitting quietly for a moment in the Purple Heaven Palace or at the Golden Summit, they tried to grasp the Taoist principle ofThe Tao follows Nature. This serenity found in nature and the insight into cosmic philosophy was a precious gift impossible to receive from books or studios alone.
